Reps. Lisa McClain and Debbie Dingell have reintroduced the Great Lakes Mapping Act, aiming to further economic development, resource management, and environmental sustainability within the Great Lakes region. This bipartisan proposal calls for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to execute high-resolution mapping to enhance understanding of the underwater environment of the area.

“Only 13 percent of the Great Lakes is mapped to modern standards. Imagine how much more these bodies of water can be used to strengthen our economy if the remaining 87 percent is utilized,” stated McClain. She emphasized the project as an opportunity to enhance Michigan’s economic growth by tapping into and protecting this significant natural resource: “My legislation with Rep. Dingell will take Michigan’s economy to the next level.”

Rep. Debbie Dingell highlighted the cultural and economic significance of the Great Lakes, explaining, “In Michigan, the Great Lakes are a way of life, and their impact is felt across our country and beyond. Protecting these waters is personal to me and to so many who call the Heartland home.”

Jennifer Boehme, CEO of the Great Lakes Observing System, expressed support from her organization, saying, “GLOS is proud to support this landmark legislation that will accelerate high-resolution mapping of the Great Lakes lakebed within a decade.”

The proposed legislation aims to finalize these mapping efforts by 2030, with future datasets made accessible to the public.
