Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The proposed legislation, introduced by Representative Chip Roy from Texas, requires individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

Following the passage of the bill, Representative Lisa McClain from Michigan issued a statement. She addressed criticism aimed at the Republican-backed legislation and clarified its intent. According to McClain, “The Democrats have continued their newest fearmongering campaign and misled the American people. Rep. Chip Roy’s bill, the SAVE Act, protects the vote of every American—including women. House Republicans simply want to keep illegal immigrants out of and restore trust in our election system.”

The newly passed bill has sparked varied reactions from political parties, with supporters arguing for its necessity in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. Critics, however, have raised concerns over potential implications for voter access.

With the approval of the House, the SAVE Act will continue through the legislative process, requiring further examination and approval by the Senate before potentially being enacted into law.
