Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2056, known as the District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act. This legislation requires the District of Columbia government to adhere to requests from federal immigration authorities, effectively ending its sanctuary city policies.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain and Congressman Clay Higgins, who introduced the bill, expressed their views on this development. “House Republicans are committed to restoring law and order across our nation, and that starts right here in our capital,” stated Chairwoman McClain. She added that sanctuary city policies have created a haven for illegal activity and jeopardized American citizens’ safety. “Rep. Higgins’ H.R. 2056 sends a clear message: no city is above federal law,” she said.

Congressman Higgins also commented on the passage of the bill: “Sanctuary policies prioritize criminal illegal aliens over the safety and security of the American people.” He emphasized that Washington D.C., as the nation’s capital, should set an example by enforcing federal immigration laws. He called on the Senate to pass this bill and send it to President Trump’s desk.

The legislation amends federal law to require D.C.’s compliance with federal immigration authority requests. It includes mandates for information sharing between D.C. authorities and federal agencies and requires D.C. to detain illegal aliens upon request.
