Matt Maddock, a Michigan state representative, shared several posts on March 9, 2026, expressing concerns about federal involvement in local zoning laws and the influence of nonprofit organizations in Michigan.
In one post, Maddock questioned the role of federal authorities in determining local zoning regulations. He wrote: “Do we want the feds telling your community what your zoning laws should be? If your zoning ppl are idiots and working for the leftists who want us all to live on top of one another, then replace them!” (March 9, 2026).
Shortly after, Maddock emphasized his position that decisions about zoning should remain at the local level. He stated: “Zoning laws are best kept locally. Just like these wind and solar bills the Dems passed two years ago bypassing local ordinances. This is the exact same principal.” (March 9, 2026).
Later that day, Maddock criticized taxpayer-funded nonprofits in Michigan, suggesting they are both politically influenced and financially successful. He posted: “Taxpayer-funded Nonprofits run by communists and democrats are the most profitable entities on the planet and Michigan taxpayers fund 3000 of them.” (March 9, 2026).
Local control over zoning has been a longstanding topic of debate in many states. In recent years, some state legislatures have passed measures allowing renewable energy projects to bypass municipal ordinances, prompting discussions about balancing state priorities with community input.
Nonprofit organizations play a significant role in Michigan’s social services sector. Many receive funding from public sources to provide health care, housing assistance, education programs, and other essential services to residents across the state.
