Matt Maddock, a public figure and Michigan state representative, posted a series of tweets on July 25 and 26, 2025, addressing topics related to state-owned assets in Michigan.

On July 25, Maddock shared information about flight logs, stating: “Here are some old flight logs that have the N numbers https://t.co/Qbz2xY1FWJ”. Later that day, he commented on state ownership of railroads with the tweet: “Did you know only 6 states are stupid enough to own railroad. Michigan spends hundreds of millions maintaining the 665 miles we own. We are #1 one in rail waste. https://t.co/RL92S7RpN4”.

In a subsequent post on July 26, Maddock highlighted additional state holdings: “The DNR also owns at least two Cessna 182’s”.

Michigan is among a small group of U.S. states that own and maintain portions of their railroad infrastructure. According to transportation records and recent reports, Michigan’s Department of Transportation manages over 600 miles of track at significant annual expense to support freight service and preserve essential routes for communities without private-sector alternatives. The state’s involvement in direct railroad ownership dates back several decades when private companies abandoned unprofitable lines.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), referenced by Maddock in his final tweet, is responsible for managing various state assets including aircraft used for environmental monitoring and enforcement activities.
