Matt Maddock, a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, posted a series of tweets on August 20, 2025, addressing the topic of ranked choice voting and his views on political opponents. The tweets were published during and after a legislative session in which a vote was held regarding a ban on ranked choice voting.

In his first tweet at 18:30 UTC, Maddock wrote: “On the House Floor now. Vote on Rigged Choice Voting ban. Every @MichiganDems voted against it because the Communist Party wants it. Only two states have it. Alaska & Maine and Murkowski/Collins is the kind of “Republican” Ranked Choice Voting produces.”

Later that evening at 19:09 UTC, he shared a link without additional commentary: “https://t.co/q1dwHPeMFB”.

At 23:02 UTC, Maddock posted another tweet expressing approval for derogatory language directed at political opponents: “Love to hear them called the Communist Pigs they are https://t.co/pYaoyGugFx”.

Ranked choice voting (RCV) is an electoral system where voters rank candidates by preference rather than selecting only one candidate. As of August 2025, Alaska and Maine are the only U.S. states using RCV in statewide elections. Critics argue that RCV can lead to outcomes where candidates with broad but not majority support win office, while supporters claim it promotes majority consensus and reduces negative campaigning.

The debate over RCV has been contentious in several states, including Michigan, where recent legislative efforts have sought to prohibit its use in state and local elections.
