Matt Maddock, a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, posted a series of tweets between February 12 and February 14, 2026, addressing various topics ranging from changes in direction to critiques of education and international relations.
On February 12, Maddock wrote, “Yeah. We will be going in a totally different direction lol”.
The following day, on February 13, he commented on an incident at a Secretary of State office: “Legislator friend of mine just watched a mother & 16 yr old daughter argue at SOS office because her daughter didn’t know how to sign her name in cursive on her drivers license. What has our edukation system become? Why to teechers refuse to teach cursive?”
On February 14, Maddock addressed Canadian political history with Cuba: “Never trust Canadian communists. They have always sided with, funded, protected and supported the communist pigs in Cuba.”
Maddock’s remarks about the decline in cursive writing reflect ongoing debates over educational priorities in the United States. In recent years, some states have reintroduced requirements for teaching cursive writing after it was removed from many curricula during shifts toward digital literacy.
His comments regarding Canada and Cuba reference longstanding tensions between North American countries over their respective foreign policies toward Cuba. The relationship between Canada and Cuba has historically differed from that of the United States; while the U.S. imposed an embargo on Cuba beginning in the early 1960s, Canada maintained diplomatic and economic ties with Havana throughout the Cold War and beyond.
