Michigan State Representative Matt Maddock posted a series of tweets on February 22 and 23, 2026, raising concerns about state funding for nonprofits and media coverage of cartel activity in Mexico.

On February 22, Maddock stated, “Michigan taxpayers fund about 3,000 nonprofits.” Later that day, he followed up with another post: “A couple of my colleagues and I were looking into 75 million spent on these 289 nonprofits. A couple days after we started nosing around, the state website containing the list vanished.”

The following day, Maddock criticized news outlets’ coverage of cartel activities in Mexico. He wrote, “Notice the fake news including Fox isn’t covering what the Cartel is doing in Mexico? It’s because they are on their side and not ours.”

Matt Maddock serves as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives. His recent posts reflect ongoing debates regarding transparency in government spending and public trust in media reporting. In Michigan, oversight of nonprofit funding has periodically drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and watchdog groups seeking greater accountability.
