U.S. Representatives Lisa McClain and Debbie Dingell introduced a bipartisan resolution on April 13 celebrating the University of Michigan men’s basketball team for winning the 2026 NCAA March Madness tournament. The Wolverines secured their first national title since 1989 with a victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies, finishing with a score of 69-63.
The resolution recognizes the achievement as a source of pride for Michigan residents and university supporters. Lawmakers say such victories help bring communities together around shared accomplishments.
“Michigan basketball gave our entire state something to celebrate. This team brought the University of Michigan community—alumni, students, and fans—together around a shared sense of pride,” Chairwoman McClain said. “Regardless of which jersey we wear in Congress, Congresswoman Dingell and I will always come together to celebrate this team. Go Blue!”
“Congratulations to the Michigan Wolverines on their historic win. Their victory is the culmination of their hard work, discipline, and dedication, and they represent the best of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the United States. It is an honor to join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in uplifting their remarkable teamwork and success. Go Blue!” said Congresswoman Dingell.
The resolution has support from several members representing districts across Michigan as well as U.S. House members who are alumni of the University of Michigan from other states.
McClain is currently serving in Congress representing Michigan’s 9th district after replacing Paul Mitchell in 2021 according to her biography. She was born in Stockbridge, Michigan in 1966 and now lives in Bruce as reported by Ballotpedia. McClain earned her Bachelor’s degree from Northwood University in 1997 according to Northwood University.
