Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office revealed that 15 noncitizens illegally voted in the 2024 election. In response, Representative Lisa McClain, along with fellow Michigan Republicans, is seeking clarification on how this occurred and what measures can be adopted to prevent recurrence.
“I expect full cooperation from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. Significant operational changes need to be made to protect the integrity of our elections, and legislation like the SAVE Act needs to be signed into law,” stated McClain. She emphasized, “Plain and simple: only U.S. citizens should vote in U.S. elections.”
The request for clarification through a letter was led by Representative John Moolenaar and signed by Representatives McClain, Jack Bergman, Bill Huizenga, Tim Walberg, Tom Barrett, and John James.
Previously, last October, McClain had expressed concerns to Benson following reports by the Detroit News of a Chinese national attending the University of Michigan voting unlawfully in the 2024 election.
In a September Congressional hearing, Benson asserted, “There is no evidence that non-citizens are voting.”
Benson stands opposed to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which aims to prevent noncitizens from voting by mandating proof of citizenship, like a REAL ID, for voter registration.
