Archery, anyone?
Sixty archers will test their skills in Oxford this weekend. Seymour Lake Township Park is set to host Competitive Advantage Showdown, an outdoor tournament organized by Rising Phoenix Archery, a Troy-based archery school.
The public is invited to watch as competitors of all ages, armed with compound and recurve bows, loose their arrows in the hopes of earning medals and the title of “Grand Champion.”
Oxford resident Bryan Young (pictured), a coach at Rising Phoenix Archery, is the tournament director. He said Seymour Lake Township Park is the perfect venue for this event because it has plenty of space and ample parking.
Young got involved in archery six years ago. He enjoys everything about it, from shooting and competing to teaching others.
One of the great things about archery is it’s a sport that can be practiced by everyone, regardless of age, gender or ability.
“I started this when I was 50,” Young noted.
Qualification rounds for the tournament will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. Elimination rounds will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28.
The tournament will be held on the field east of the Rick Laidler Pavilion, located in the park’s southern end. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
