Check Smoke, Carbon Monoxide Alarms

With many residents turning on their heat for the first time, running their fireplaces, or cooking for the holidays, it's a good idea to ensure you have properly working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

More than 150 people in the U.S. die every year from accidental, non fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is often referred to as "The Invisible Killer" because it is a colorless and odorless gas.

Here are some tips to protect your family from the dangers of CO:

Install and maintain CO alarms inside your home to provide early warning of CO.

Install CO alarms in a central location outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of your home.

Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from all doors, windows, and vents.

Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris.

The Rochester Hills Fire Department offers FREE carbon monoxide alarms to all residents. Please call the Rochester Hills Fire Department at 248-841-2705 to schedule your appointment.
