AVONDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL: A Letter from the Superintendent

Letter

Avondale Middle School issued the following announcement.

As guidance from our state continues to evolve during this time of uncertainty, we have been informed that the Michigan Department of Education has indicated that online work and packets do not count toward instructional time when we calculate days and hours that make up the school calendar.

Though we do not intend to factor into overall student grades the work they are completing at home, the work does count in terms of preventing the academic regression that often occurs when students are away from school.  Avondale teachers are working to use this time productively to maintain a continuity of academics and it is our hope that our students will take advantage.  We urge you to continue the lessons that you have been provided for your student as you have been. This state decision does not alter our expectations in providing for ongoing educational continuity.  Doing school work each day also adds a sense of “normalcy” to your student’s day, it keeps their skills sharp, and can prevent complacency about their learning.

We expect that there will be “forgiveness” on days within future decisions made by the state which will in effect, nullify the instructional decision made this morning eliminating (or at a minimum minimizing) any extensions to the current school year.   In addition, we have received word that the federal government has opened the door for suspending state required testing for this year, so we are awaiting our state’s response which should be shortly.

Again, we appreciate your patience as we navigate the evolving guidance from the state and federal government. Again, we urge that you continue with assisting your child with their online/work packets as you have been.
