Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued the following announcement on May 7.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity has selected Mid-Michigan Community Action Agency as the intermediate provider for Muskegon and Oceana counties.
As community action agency for Muskegon and Oceana counties, Mid-Michigan will work to reduce the causes, conditions and effects of poverty and promote social and economic opportunities that foster self-sufficiency for low-income residents.
This action – retroactive to April 1 – comes after the Bureau of Community Action and Economic Opportunity issued a notice to rescind the designation of Muskegon Oceana Community Action Partnership in October 2019. Muskegon Oceana Community Action Partnership has appealed the decision and is awaiting a state administrative hearing that is on hold until the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“MDHHS is committed to ensuring a coordinated response for people in Muskegon and Oceana counties struggling with poverty that is made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lewis Roubal, chief deputy director of opportunity for MDHHS. “The intermediate provider is another resource in meeting the needs of people living in these counties.”
Mid-Michigan also serves Mecosta, Osceola, Clare, Gladwin, Midland, and Bay counties with multiple grant sources including the Community Services Block Grant and Weatherization Assistance Program administered by MDHHS. As the intermediate provider, it will immediately expand services to the low-income individuals and families living in Muskegon and Oceana counties using federal stimulus funding to provide relief efforts for COVID-19.
Services will initially include housing stability supports, food assistance and critical needs assistance. Eligible households may receive help with past-due mortgage payments, late property taxes, food vouchers, water shutoffs, and other household emergencies. Michigan has 28 Community Action Agencies.
