The Rochester Hills Fire Department recommends one smoke alarm in every bedroom and one on every level of your home.  A carbon monoxide alarm is also recommended on every level of your home.  These devices are vital to the safety of you and your family.  In many cases they are your only defense and can warn you early in the fire.  Make sure to test those alarms on a monthly or regular basis.

With the colder weather, many use space heaters to help keep areas of the home warm.  Remember space heaters need space - at least 3’ clearance.  And always turn them off when you are not in the room with the space heater.

Remember you and your family should have a plan to escape a fire.  Plan and practice to escape a fire.  Stay low to escape a fire.  Smoke and heat will be up high.  So get low and get out.

If you have any questions about smoke alarms or fire safety in your home, please call the Rochester Hills Fire Department at 248.841.2705.
