On November 16, 2022, three Lake Orion High School student-athletes signed a national letter of-intent to play college athletics. The three students were celebrated by family, friends and staff at a signing ceremony in the auditorium lobby prior to the school day.
Nina Horning will be a volleyball player at Cincinnati, Quinn McElroy will play lacrosse for Grand Valley State University, and Sophia Shonts will be on the ice hockey team at Adrian College.
Horning was a state finalist for Miss Volleyball, placing fourth in the voting, has led the LOHS varsity team in kills each year of her career.
"She's been a large part of any success that we've had over these four years," said LOHS volleyball coach Tony Scavarda. "There was a big expectation on her shoulders coming in and she did a great job handling that through her four years. This was, by far, her best season and she was absolutely dominant."
In her career, the Dragons reached a state semifinal and won multiple district titles as well.
McElroy was a second-team all-state selection as a junior from the Michigan Lacrosse Coaches Association and she's been an All-OAA selection the past two years as well as the team MVP as a sophomore and captain as a junior.
"Quinn has been a multi-sport athlete her entire life, which is very admirable," LOHS lacrosse coach Meghan Allcorn said. "And has brought a lot of skills and talents to the lacrosse field, including and not limited to quickness, field readability, ability to play both sides, defense and offense as well as being a midfielder. She's kind of an all-around girls for us."
Shonts played lacrosse at LOHS, but has played travel hockey for seven years, including winning the first women's national Silver Stick tournament. She has played for the USA Eagles for the past three years.
"Sophia is an amazing athlete and someone who radiates kindness and strives to be the best at whatever she does," her coach said in a statement. "She is an exceptional teammate and friend. Sophia always puts in 100% in practice, games and in her personal life. Her quickness and agility comes from many years of playing hockey and these skills radiate on the lacrosse field."
