At their March 6 board of education meeting, the Pontiac School District recognized three young students who have shown exemplary skill and work ethic in their drama department.

Superintendent Kelley Williams gave each a certificate of recognition and appreciation in honor of their achievements both on and off the stage.

The students who were honored were Preston Perry, who had an outstanding performance in Annie Junior, put on by the Flagstar Strand Theatre, and Lola Milton, who also was a part of the same production. The district also recognized Gabriel Brown for his part in the production.

While none of the students were able to make it to the board meeting, the school members still praised their accomplishments.

“I will start by saying these students have exemplified excellence in the drama department,” said Williams. “In the Pontiac School District, and they are leading the way not only in the district where they lead the way, but they have started in our own community.”

Additionally, Williams also recognized all trustees on the school board as the state had given them Honors Board Recognition.

The award is given to a school board where all trustees complete their certifications. While the state sent them a single plaque to hang in their district building, the school district also decided to make each individual trustee their own version of the plaque to take home and proudly display to commemorate their accomplishment.

Board President Garrett Gill was very excited about the news and said that this was the third honors board to happen in the school district, the first happening in 2012 and the second occurring in 2016.

The 2023 board, however, took the crown with how quickly they earned the distinction, far faster than either previous board. Gill praised the board’s high standards and continuing professional development efforts to make themselves better suited to serve their community.
