House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) has asked the Chief Administrative Officer of the U.S. House of Representatives to withhold her salary during the ongoing government shutdown.
“It’s shameful that our troops who are willing to lay their lives on the line for this country are left in limbo while Washington Democrats play political games,” McClain said. “If the people who defend this country have to go without a paycheck, Members of Congress shouldn’t collect one either. We work for the American people — not the other way around.”
McClain pointed out that on September 19, House Republicans passed a bill to fund the government through November 21, which would have ensured that service members continued to receive pay. She noted that all but one House Democrat voted against the measure, leading to a shutdown. She also stated that Senate Democrats have voted seven times against reopening the government, which she says puts military pay at risk.
Lisa McClain has represented Michigan’s 9th district in Congress since 2021, succeeding Paul Mitchell. She was born in Stockbridge, Michigan in 1966 and currently resides in Bruce. McClain earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University in 1997.
Her letter to the Chief Administrative Officer is available for public viewing.
