LOHS Student Athlete of the Week: Jacob Lee

Athlete2

Lake Orion Community Schools issued the following announcement on Sept 8.

Name: Jacob Lee

Class: Senior

GPA: 3.2

Parents: Julia and Oliver Lee

Sports: Soccer and football

Maintaining a 3.2 grade point average, senior Jacob Lee holds the unique distinction of playing two sports in one season, starring as a midfielder on Chris Corteg’s soccer team and serving as the kicker for John Blackstock’s football program.

Lee is in his third year as a varsity soccer player and his first year as a member of the football team, but he jumped right into action, making both of his field goal attempts – one from 22 yards and the other from 37 – plus all three of his extra points in the season-opening 33-7 victory over the Utica Eisenhower Eagles at Dragon Stadium on August 26.

Speaking with Lee on September 7, he shared how this connection with the football program came to be.

“I started because I actually knew one of the coaches (junior varsity offensive and defensive line coach Jeff Smart) from the church I go to, so that’s how I got into playing football,” he said.

“It’s not hard to balance both, not yet at least because soccer practices in the morning, and soccer practices in the afternoon and then, the games are Fridays, and we don’t have any soccer games on Fridays. Once the school year starts, when football and soccer are both after school, I’m going to have to see how it will work.”

While his contributions have played an important role on the football team, soccer is Lee’s preferred sport, one he hopes to continue playing at the collegiate level.

One of the leaders on Corteg’s roster as a senior and a three-year player, he shared his favorite moment from his Lake Orion soccer career thus far.

“I would say our sophomore year when we played in the district semifinals against Eisenhower,” he began.

“We won 2-1, and no one thought we were going to win because we were the underdogs and Eisenhower is really good, but we ended up winning.”

Thanks in large part to Lee and his fellow Class of 2022 members, the Dragon soccer program has started their 2021 season 6-2-1, including winning their first five games of the year.

The team will hit their home turf today, Wednesday, September 8, to battle the Birmingham Groves Falcons in their first Oakland Activities Association (OAA) White Division game at 7 p.m.

Lee will kick for the football team when they travel to Southfield A&T to clash with the Warriors on Friday, September 10, also at 7 p.m.

The next time he will kick field goals and extra points in front of the home crowd will be Friday, September 17, when the Oxford Wildcats come to town.
