Juvenile Suspect Arrested for Possessing a Firearm at Avondale High School Football Game

Juvenile Suspect Arrested for Possessing a Firearm at Avondale High School Football Game:

On Thursday, September 1, 2022, at about 7:30 pm, officers from the Auburn Hills Police Department were working at the Avondale High School vs. Holly High School Varsity Football game.  An officer observed three males (high school age) approaching the main entrance gate to the stadium.  Once they observed the officer, all three quickly turned around and went behind a small building next to the parking lot.  The officer investigated further to determine what they were doing.  A check of the area by the officer located a loaded 9mm pistol in a small bag under some bricks.  Officers quickly coordinated a plan to track down the subjects, who had subsequently gone into the stadium prior to the officer locating the pistol.  Three juvenile males were detained for questioning during the football game.

Review of surveillance video of the area determined that the three subjects detained were not the person who had possession of the bag with the gun in it.  Further follow-up was conducted in this case and the identity of the suspect was confirmed.  On Friday, September 2, 2022, officers located the suspect, a 17-year-old male, from Pontiac at his residence.  The juvenile suspect was subsequently arrested, interviewed with his parent present, and lodged at Children’s Village pending a review for criminal charges by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.  The firearm in this incident, a 9mm pistol, had previously been reported stolen from another state.

The suspect in this case is not a student at Avondale High School or Holly High School.  A school dance that had been scheduled at the high school after the game was cancelled due to this incident and for the welfare/safety of all students and staff.

We are thankful for the diligence of our police officers and staff at Avondale High School in coordinating a proper response to this incident.  There is zero tolerance for anyone who chooses to bring a firearm to our schools illegally.  All available resources will be utilized to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure our schools remain a safe environment for everyone.  We also thank the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case and assisting us in taking the juvenile into custody.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to contact the Auburn Hills Police Department at 248-370-9460.
