Future heroes in training!
Earlier today, Oxford High School students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Education Program engaged in Basic Life Support/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS/CPR) training at Oxford Fire Station #1.
Sixteen students are participating in this valuable program, which is now in its third year. They are: Natalie Danko, Leilah Degasperis, Faith Diegel, Lauren Farris, Amelia Foster, Veronica Heinemann, Shyanne Hoyt, Madison Johnson, Alyssa Kuhl, Mackayla McNamara, Brianna Penzien, Zac Rolling, Alanna Rundell, Ella Szymanski, Dalia Verbeke and Hailey Wilson.
The EMT Education Program is designed to prepare students to: 1) meet all of the state’s education requirements for EMTs and 2) take the National Registry exam after they turn 18. Successful completion of this exam is necessary to become a licensed EMT in Michigan.
The program is a partnership between Oxford Community Schools, the Oxford Fire Department and the Addison Township Fire Department. The class is part of the school district’s Health Science Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. It is available to eligible high school seniors enrolled in Oxford Schools.
Addison Fire EMS Coordinator Lt. Ben Rice serves as course coordinator. Addison’s fire department is licensed by the state to teach EMT level education. Classes are held at Oxford Fire Station #1 (96 N. Washington St.). Kelly Kilgore, the fire department’s recruitment and retention manager, serves as the course’s lead instructor.
