PC gives green light to McLaren

PC gives green light to McLaren . . . McLaren Oakland will construct a new two-story, 50,000-square-foot ambulatory care facility on its existing site (385 N. Lapeer Rd.) and an adjacent parcel. On Thursday evening, township planning commissioners voted 6-0 to grant final site plan approval for the project.

“This is a great step forward for our community,” said Oxford Township Supervisor Jack Curtis. “When it comes to medical services, it’s no secret that Oxford is sorely lacking. People should not have to travel outside their community to receive the care they need. McLaren’s new ambulatory care center will help fill the gap. I applaud McLaren’s willingness to reinvest in Oxford by upgrading their facility and expanding their services.”

An ambulatory care facility is not a hospital. It provides medical services on an outpatient basis. The new McLaren Oakland building will include:  • Freestanding emergency department • Comprehensive diagnostic imaging center • Oncology clinic including pharmacy • Physical therapy and cardiac rehab • Lab • Primary care services • Multi-specialty clinic

The new facility represents a $35 million investment. Once it is completed, McLaren plans to demolish the existing one-story building, which opened in 1980.

Although he’s pleased the McLaren project is moving forward, Supervisor Curtis noted, “Oxford still needs an acute care hospital – a place where patients can be admitted for overnight stays.”

“We’re still fighting for that,” he said. “We’re still pleading our case to the State of Michigan and whoever else will listen. We’re still making phone calls, sending emails and attending meetings. We’re not going to quit. When it comes to getting a hospital, we’re not tied to a specific healthcare provider. We just want the state to acknowledge our community’s need, then allow the Certificate of Need process to move forward with whoever can best serve our residents.”

Certificate of Need approval is required to build a hospital in Michigan.
