State Representative Mark Tisdel has expressed concern over the recent authorization of a $368 million rate hike for DTE Energy customers by the Michigan Public Service Commission. The rate hike, which amounts to a 6.4% increase, is expected to result in higher energy prices for residents of Michigan.

In a statement, Rep. Tisdel highlighted the costly impact of energy mandates on consumers. He stated, "Mandates come with expensive compliance costs. As the state ramps up new energy requirements, Michiganders' electricity prices will keep ramping up, too. We're already seeing rates rise because of previous 'clean energy' regulations, and burdensome new laws will require costly investments and make electric bills more expensive for residents and local businesses. Michigan families deserve better than the higher energy prices headed their way."

DTE Energy, the utility company seeking the rate increase, has cited the need to comply with the state's existing clean energy goals as a reason for the hike. However, Rep. Tisdel pointed out that the new clean energy mandates signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer will impose even greater costs on consumers. Under these laws, natural gas power plants will be effectively banned, and expensive carbon capture technology will be required instead. The shift towards wind and solar power, which are less reliable sources than natural gas, will necessitate costly investments that will ultimately be passed on to Michigan residents and small businesses through higher electric bills.

Rep. Tisdel's warning about the impact of these new laws on energy prices echoes the concerns of many who believe that the transition to cleaner energy sources should not come at the expense of affordability and reliability. As Michigan residents brace themselves for higher energy costs, the debate over the balance between environmental goals and economic considerations continues.
