State Rep. Donni Steele | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Donni Steele, a Republican from Orion Township, has criticized the governor's executive budget recommendations, stating that they prioritize expensive new programs over the basic need to fix local roads. As the vice chair of the transportation appropriations subcommittee, Steele expressed her concerns regarding the lack of a substantive plan to address the crumbling infrastructure in Michigan.
In a statement released today, Steele highlighted the governor's failure to make repairing local roads a priority, despite touting borrowed road funding. She emphasized that not only would future generations have to bear the burden of paying back this borrowed money, but it would also not be directed towards fixing the pressing issue of deteriorating roads.
Steele drew attention to the significant financial impact of broken roads on Michigan residents. Citing reports from last fall, she revealed that the state's crumbling infrastructure costs drivers a staggering $4.3 billion annually. Despite the existence of provisions for motorists to seek reimbursement for repair expenses, less than $150,000 of that $4.3 billion has been returned to the public since 2018. This translates to an average of $1,093 per household spent solely on vehicle repairs.
Recognizing the fundamental role of government, Steele called for a renewed focus on fulfilling promises by addressing the crucial issue of potholes. She urged the state to prioritize fixing local roads and allocate resources accordingly, emphasizing the need to alleviate the financial burden on Michigan residents and ensure their safety on the road.
Rep. Steele's statement serves as a reminder that promises alone cannot fill potholes. It highlights the pressing need for effective and sustainable solutions to address Michigan's crumbling infrastructure. The state must prioritize the basic needs of its residents and invest in the repair and maintenance of local roads to ensure the well-being and economic prosperity of its citizens.
