State Rep. Donni Steele criticized House Democrats for blocking a vote on her bipartisan resolution to designate May 2 as End Jew-Hatred Day in Michigan. The resolution was introduced in response to ongoing antisemitic incidents in the state. Steele, from Orion Township, stated, “At this point, House Democrat leadership and these radical protestors are one and the same.” She added, “Protestors want to ignore the atrocities Hamas committed against the Israeli people last fall, and House Democrats want to ignore the reality that no protest calling for the destruction of Israel could be peaceful. We’re being blocked by a small group of radical members who aren’t willing to condemn antisemitism. I know there are Democrats that will support this resolution.”
Last weekend, anti-Israel protestors disrupted the University of Michigan commencement ceremony to draw attention to their campaign for the complete abandonment of Israel by the United States. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, whose daughter was graduating, was confronted by a protestor demanding an explanation of her support for genocide. Similar protests have been causing disturbances across the country, affecting classes and small businesses, including in various Michigan campuses.
Steele’s resolution closely resembles a bipartisan measure passed by the Michigan Senate the previous week.
