Matt Maddock, a Michigan state representative, posted several comments on social media on August 9 and 10, 2025, addressing issues related to education administration, bail reform in Baltimore, and government licensing.
On August 9, Maddock commented on trends in school staffing: "From 2000 to 2017 school administrators increased 75% and teachers only increased 8%. Fat cat administrators administrating administrators are hogging classroom money."
Later that evening, he turned his attention to criminal justice policy in Baltimore: "Baltimore eliminated bail 8 yrs ago to reduce jail population and now have more ppl in jail than B4. They release with zero bail then they skip and if re-arrested, they keep you in jail for years".
In the early hours of August 10, Maddock criticized government licensing: "The gooberment only gives you a license so they can take it away."
Maddock has previously voiced concerns about administrative costs in education. Nationally, there has been debate over the growth of non-teaching staff relative to teachers over recent decades. In Baltimore, efforts to reform cash bail policies began in earnest around 2017 when Maryland’s highest court encouraged judges to avoid setting unaffordable bail amounts for defendants who could not pay. The effectiveness and consequences of these reforms remain contested among policymakers and researchers.
Government licensing requirements are a frequent subject of political debate at both state and federal levels. Critics argue such requirements can be used as tools for regulation or control beyond their stated purposes.
