Oxford Charter Township recently issued the following announcement.
VFW recognizes Oxford Twp. substation staff for life-saving actions during OHS tragedy . . .
Earlier today, members of North Oakland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 334 presented a national "Life Saving Award" to the staff of the Oakland County Sheriff's Oxford Township substation. The award recognized their quick actions during the Nov. 30, 2021 shooting at Oxford High School.
The award consisted of a certificate and a medal.
The certificate reads: "In grateful recognition and sincere appreciation of your prompt life-saving action while protecting others in the line of duty. Your timely action resulting in saving the life of another is one of the highest obligations to humanity. Your guardianship will long serve as an inspiration to others in your community, and especially the Veterans of Foreign Wars."
It was signed by the VFW's national Commander-in-Chief Matthew M. Mihelcic and Adjutant General Kevin Jones.
The "Life Saving Award" was presented by North Oakland VFW Post 334 Quartermaster Chuck Haskin and Post Commander Jim Hubbard, both veterans of the Vietnam War.
Haskin praised the sheriff's deputies assigned to the Oxford Township substation for their "quick response" to the tragedy at OHS.
"By stopping the shooter when they did, the officers saved lives," Haskin said. "I have the highest regard for the job they did that day."
