Retired Oxford Fire Chief Pete Scholz was honored by the Oxford Chamber of Commerce Wednesday morning during the 2023 State of the Community and Leadership Awards breakfast at Independence Village. He was presented with one of two Community Leadership Awards.
“He lives, breathes and cares for this community more than anyone I’ve ever known,” said Chamber Board Secretary Aaron Drenikowski, of NES Plumbing Heating & Cooling.
Scholz joined the fire department as a paid-on-call member in February 1976, five years after he graduated from Oxford High School. Over the next 46 years, he rose through the ranks, serving as captain, assistant chief and deputy chief before taking over as chief in November 2008. He retired on Dec. 31, 2022.
Scholz, who has lived in Oxford since the third grade, also helped downtown Oxford flourish economically, aesthetically and socially through his service on the Downtown Development Authority board, which he joined in October 2013.
“This is my community . . . (Oxford) is who I am. (Oxford) is what I stand for,” Scholz told the audience.
Scholz took a moment to recognize his wife, Wendy, and children – Domonique, Racquell and Jordan – for the sacrifices they made and the support they gave him over the years. He missed many meals and movies with them to serve and protect Oxford.
