On December 7, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.J. Res.88, a resolution introduced by Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI), aimed at preventing President Biden from overriding the authority of the Supreme Court of the United States of America. The resolution provides for Congressional disapproval of the Biden Administration's plan to cancel student loan debt for borrowers as part of his free college agenda.

In a statement, Rep. Lisa McClain expressed her concerns about President Biden's free college plan, stating, "President Biden’s disastrous free college plan is a slap in the face to Americans across the country who went to college and paid off their loans, and to Americans who never went to college in the first place." She further criticized the President's attempt to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court despite its ruling that the plan was unconstitutional, highlighting his disregard for institutions and determination to push his radical agenda.

The Wharton Business School Budget Model estimates that the President's plan would cost taxpayers nearly $500 billion over the next decade. This has led House Republicans to view the cancellation of student debt as a "luxurious handout" to President Biden's elite backers, rather than a solution for hardworking Americans. Their focus is on supporting individuals who have taken responsibility for their loans and prioritize paying their bills, rather than those who seek government assistance for their expensive choices.

The passing of H.J. Res.88 by the U.S. House of Representatives reflects the division among lawmakers regarding President Biden's free college agenda and his use of executive power to cancel student loan debt. The resolution serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the authority of the Supreme Court and the role of Congress in challenging unconstitutional actions taken by the executive branch.

As the resolution moves forward, it remains to be seen how the Senate will respond and whether it will have sufficient support to become law. Nevertheless, the passage of H.J. Res.88 in the House demonstrates the strong opposition to President Biden's plan and the commitment of some lawmakers to protect the integrity of the Supreme Court and the constitutional powers of Congress.
