The Michigan House Committee on Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure has unanimously approved a plan to dedicate a highway in honor of the late U.S. Rep. William S. Broomfield. State Rep. Mark Tisdel's House Bill 4705 seeks to rename a portion of Rochester Road as the "William S. Broomfield Memorial Highway." The bill now moves forward for consideration by the full House of Representatives.
William S. Broomfield was a prominent figure in both national and state politics. A native of Royal Oak, Michigan, Broomfield served as a state representative, state senator, and U.S. congressman for several decades. He was known for his extensive tenure on the key Foreign Affairs Committee and held the distinction of being the longest-serving Republican representative before his retirement. Broomfield's dedication to public service and his ability to work across party lines made him a respected figure in Oakland County and beyond.
State Rep. Mark Tisdel, who proposed the legislation, spoke highly of Broomfield's contributions to their community. "From the Michigan Legislature to the U.S. Congress, William S. Broomfield was a titan for Oakland County," said Tisdel, who represents Rochester Hills. "Congressman Broomfield had a record of working across the aisle to strengthen our nation and its people — especially the people of our community. My legislation will dedicate a portion of Rochester Road in honor of this long-time public servant from our area."
The stretch of M-150, commonly referred to as Rochester Road, from the Tienken Road intersection to the intersection with M-59, will bear the name of the late lawmaker if the bill becomes law. This renaming serves as a lasting tribute to Broomfield's legacy and his commitment to the people he served.
The approval of Tisdel's plan by the House Committee on Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure reflects the recognition of Broomfield's significant contributions to both Michigan and the nation. As the bill now moves forward for consideration by the full House of Representatives, it is expected to receive support from lawmakers who acknowledge the importance of honoring those who have dedicated their lives to public service.
If the bill is ultimately passed into law, the "William S. Broomfield Memorial Highway" will stand as a testament to the lasting impact of a dedicated public servant. Broomfield's legacy will continue to be celebrated and remembered by the community he served for so many years.
