Sen. Michael Webber raised serious concerns over patient care at Michigan's only psychiatric hospital for minors during a Senate subcommittee meeting focused on department appropriations. Webber emphasized the need for public conversations with MDHHS to ensure the protection and care of children in need, stating, "The concerning testimony that we heard today underscores the need for future public conversations with MDHHS in order to protect and care for the children during a serious time of need."

Webber expressed his commitment to advocating for the well-being of young patients and their parents, stating, "I hope this is the first of many public conversations with the department to provide parents with accountability. I will continue to advocate on behalf of these kids and their parents in Lansing."

The senator renewed his call for legislative hearings following reports of a mother filing a $100 million lawsuit over the mistreatment of her 10-year-old child at Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital. Webber found it troubling that an employee involved in a disturbing incident was only placed on temporary leave, remarking, "I find it very troubling to learn that one of the employees involved in this horrific incident has only been placed on temporary leave and will in all likelihood return to the hospital."

During his visit to the hospital, Webber voiced his concerns over the treatment of patients, particularly referencing a questionable active shooter drill that resulted in a legal settlement. He expressed gratitude for being able to participate in the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on MDHHS, stating, "These children deserve better, and their families deserve action and accountability."

Webber urged his fellow lawmakers to join him in investigating the issues within the state agency, emphasizing the importance of addressing the shortcomings in patient care. He had previously requested reviews into the Hawthorn Center and petitioned the Office of Auditor General to investigate after hearing testimonies from patients and families.

The Office of Auditor General will initiate an investigation into how the Office of Recipients Rights handles allegations at state-run psychiatric hospitals starting in April. Residents with concerns or experiences regarding care at these hospitals are encouraged to contact Disability Rights Michigan for assistance.

Senator Webber provided contact information for individuals seeking to share their experiences or raise concerns about care received at state-run psychiatric hospitals and urged the public to stay informed about state government developments.
