Sen. Michael Webber has requested patient weight change data and nutritional guidelines from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel and Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital Director Mary Clare Solky. The senator expressed concerns about children not receiving adequate food and losing weight under the state's care. In a letter to the directors, Sen. Webber stated, “Unfortunately, it continues to be more difficult than it should be to acquire acceptable data and answers to address this serious situation.”

During a Senate subcommittee meeting on department appropriations, Sen. Webber questioned MDHHS deputy directors about patient care at the state's only psychiatric hospital for minors. He emphasized the importance of addressing parents' concerns about nutrition and food service, stating, “Frankly, I believe parents know their kids better than the state and I found the dismissive explanation that obese children are merely losing weight and getting healthier out of touch with parents’ genuine concerns.”

Sen. Webber highlighted the need for transparency and public conversations with MDHHS regarding the care of young people at Walter Reuther, noting, “The troubling testimony we heard that day and the lack of follow through to provide the Legislature with more information further illustrates the real need for future public conversations.”

Individuals who wish to share their experiences or concerns about care received at state-run psychiatric hospitals are encouraged to contact Disability Rights Michigan at 1-800-288-5923 or visit drmich.org.

In conclusion, Sen. Webber's efforts to request data and guidelines for the state's psychiatric care facility for minors reflect his commitment to ensuring the well-being of young individuals under the state's care.
