LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Michael Webber has voiced his support for a $1.6 million investment in natural resources for the Greater Rochester Area as part of a broader $27.3 million Natural Resources Trust Fund (NRTF) allocation across Michigan. The funding is aimed at park and trail developments and public land acquisitions.

Webber, representing Rochester Hills, emphasized the importance of the NRTF in enhancing local recreational opportunities without imposing additional tax burdens. He stated, “This trust fund has proven to be a great tool for investing in our parks and natural resources without putting additional tax burdens on state residents.” Additionally, he expressed his satisfaction with the allocation of funds to projects within the 9th Senate District, foreseeing long-term benefits for families and community members.

The NRTF, sustained by interest from state-owned mineral rights development, has been instrumental in financing numerous projects since its establishment in 1976. With a history of funding 2,760 projects totaling $1.3 billion, the NRTF continues to support initiatives that preserve and enhance Michigan's natural landscapes.

The approved Senate Bill 817 authorizes the release of $27.3 million from the NRTF for 35 development projects and 18 land acquisitions statewide. Coupled with local matching funds of $34.2 million, the total investment reaches $61.5 million.

Specifically for the Greater Rochester Area, the legislation allocates $1.3 million to aid Rochester Hills in acquiring nearly nine acres of land adjacent to Cloverport Park along the Clinton River. This acquisition aims to expand public green space and establish a trail hub, fostering enhanced connectivity between Rochester Hills and downtown Rochester.

Furthermore, the bill designates $300,000 for improvements along the Paint Creek Trail, including the replacement of a century-old timber railroad bridge with a modern steel truss bridge. This upgrade, supported by local matching funds, will enhance accessibility for trail users and emergency vehicles in the region.

Sen. Webber's advocacy for these natural resource investments aligns with his commitment to serving Michigan's 9th Senate District, encompassing Rochester, Rochester Hills, Troy, Utica, and parts of Oakland Township, Shelby Township, and Sterling Heights.
