Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan has joined forces with other members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation to address concerns over Canada's recent implementation of a digital services tax (DST) on U.S. companies. The group sent a letter to the Biden Administration urging a direct response, citing potential harm to American businesses and workers, as well as a possible violation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
McClain emphasized the importance of the USMCA in fostering economic cooperation across North America. "The USMCA created a prosperous and free-flowing economic environment in North America, where commerce was able to cross borders without unwarranted restrictions," she stated. She further expressed concern that Canada's DST could disrupt this trade agreement and negatively impact businesses and consumers already facing challenges.
In response to these developments, the United States Trade Representative has requested dispute settlement consultations with Canada.
The letter addressed to the administration was also signed by Representatives Dan Kildee, Bill Huizenga, Elissa Slotkin, Hillary Scholten, and John Moolenaar.
