Later the same day, she honored American military service members by stating that "The sacrifice of the brave 13 American service members killed defending Abbey Gate will not be in vain." McClain expressed pride in awarding these individuals posthumously with the Congressional Gold Medal, saying, "It was my honor to enshrine their heroism in our history."
