Rep. Lisa McClain from Michigan has expressed her concerns about the rise of antisemitism on college campuses in an op-ed published in Breitbart News. This comes ahead of a hearing by the House Education and Workforce Committee addressing this issue. In her article, McClain draws from her own college experiences and urges higher education institutions to take stronger accountability measures.
In the op-ed, McClain states: “There’s no singular path to success. What matters is that every student—Jewish or not—can pursue their education in a safe and respectful environment." She emphasizes that while she felt secure during her time at college, many students today face threats based on their identity or faith.
McClain also encourages students and parents to consider alternatives to elite institutions where such incidents are reportedly taking place. "As we continue to confront antisemitism on American college campuses, I want to remind students and parents that the elite institutions where these abhorrent actions are taking place are not your only option," she writes.
Furthermore, McClain highlights the importance of federal funding being conditional on how institutions handle bigotry: “Let me be clear: receiving federal funding is a privilege, not a right. It should not be extended to institutions that allow bigotry to go unchecked.” She concludes by stating that combating antisemitism transcends political lines and is a moral imperative for all communities.
