House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain addressed university presidents regarding antisemitism on campuses during a House Committee on Education and Workforce hearing. The session, titled "Beyond the Ivy League: Stopping the Spread of Antisemitism on American Campuses," featured an exchange between McClain and Dr. Robert Manuel, President of DePaul University.
Chairwoman McClain expressed her concerns about the lack of action against antisemitism, stating, “So, I don’t think the issue is more policies, I think the issue is action. So, the people that are in charge, would you say that, that is an acceptable amount of time for action?” Dr. Manuel agreed with her assessment and acknowledged the need for improvement.
McClain questioned the delay in addressing security issues related to antisemitic incidents on campus. She remarked on a specific case where nearly three weeks elapsed without appropriate action being taken: “Great. So, would you agree with me also that almost three weeks from the 29th to the 16th is not an acceptable time for security to take action to disassemble an encampment?” Manuel concurred with this point.
The Chairwoman further inquired about accountability measures within university administration: “Thank you very much. So, who has been fired or who has been replaced? Because that does not seem real tough to me. Anybody? Anybody been replaced?” In response, Manuel mentioned turnover but did not specify any direct consequences for those responsible.
Continuing her line of questioning regarding accountability, McClain pressed for details: “I’m not asking about turnover. What consequences happened to the people who were supposed to be in charge?” Manuel responded by mentioning student group accountability but did not address administrative actions directly.
