Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Taiwan Conflict Deterrence Act, introduced by House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain. The legislation aims to impose severe economic consequences on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) if it initiates a military invasion of Taiwan.
Chairwoman McClain emphasized the significance of this bipartisan move: “Congress took a major step to protect peace, defend democracy, and deter aggression against our ally Taiwan.” She added that the act sends a clear message to the CCP about the costs of invading Taiwan and highlighted her pride in introducing legislation that reinforces peace through strength in the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier in March, the House Financial Services Committee unanimously passed the bill with a 48-0 vote. This legislation marks Chairwoman McClain’s first bill introduced in this Congress.
