Despite hospitals’ best efforts to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE), shortages are continuing to be an issue nationwide. Grants are being offered by Oakland County to companies that will help bridge the gap in PPE.
According to the Oakland County Times, Oakland County is offering grants from a $700,000 fund to manufacturing companies that choose to direct their attention to the production of protective equipment, such as face masks and gowns.
The grant has been labeled “Saving Business, Saving Lives,” and it promises immediate financial relief for companies that are willing to shift their focus to the production of life-saving equipment for health care professionals.
Oakland County is home to more than 500 sewing and clothing manufacturers, as well as 3D printers, paint suppliers and plastics printers, all of which have the capabilities to produce PPE.
County Executive David Coulter said that this is a win-win for businesses and health professionals alike.
“We know this is a critical time for our health care professionals and first responders who are desperately short of needed protective equipment but continue to risk their lives helping to save others during the coronavirus pandemic,” Coulter said to the Oakland County Times. “We also know there is incredible manufacturing might in our county, and these companies want to answer the call. This grant will help them respond to this crisis while infusing them with a boost to move quickly.”
In order to be eligible for the grant, companies must show that they can actually produce the end product in a timely fashion. Companies interested in the grant can apply at Oakland County's website.
According to The Daily Mining Gazette, distilleries in the state are being encouraged to use their facilities and supplies to craft hand sanitizers and disinfectant.
Phil Teply, director of technology, commercialization and growth with the Small Business Development Center, said that this is a chance for struggling companies to stay in business while also providing necessary supplies to those who are battling COVID-19.
